Prime Minister Mukhammedkalyi Abylgaziev
28 January 2021
Former Kyrgyz Prime Minister Mukhammedkalyi Abylgaziev has been arrested on corruption charges, said the State Committee for National Security (UKMK) on 27 January 2021. He has also been charged with illegal enrichment.
Abylgaziev reportedly helped the Kumtor Gold Company illegally obtain additional lands for geological works and mining while he was in office. He acquired assets which were several times higher than what his official income would have allowed. He also purchased expensive properties across the country in order to justify his illegal incomes, the report said.
Abylgaziev was appointed head of the Kyrgyz government on 20 April 2018 and he resigned on 15 June 2020 in connection with a criminal investigation into corruption in the sale of radio frequencies.
Financial police said in October 2020 that Abylgaziev was ordered to remain in the country.
