The West Australian government’s Local Government Minister John Castrilli said that he has launched a corruption inquiry into Perth’s south-suburban Canning City Council at the request of its mayor. He added that the inquiry relates to “matters associated with staffing issues and administration”.

The inquiry follows a Crime and Corruption Commission investigation into Perth’s north-suburban Stirling City Council, which resulted in one witness taking his own life the day before giving evidence, in September 2010, and another man receiving a suspended sentence in November for his role in $135,000 worth of false procurements.
