An agent linked to Sembcorp Marine’s Brazilian subsidiaries, Guilherme Esteves de Jesus, was sentenced to 19 years and 4 months in prison and also fined by the Federal Courts of Curitiba.  SembMarine said this in a filing with the Singapore Exchange on Friday (Feb 21). It learnt of the sentencing on Feb 20.
SembMarine’s subsidiaries engaged companies connected to de Jesus to bribe rig supplier Sete Brasil in 2012. Further charges have been filed against de Jesus for money laundering by Brazilian federal prosecutors. This proceeding is still ongoing, said SembMarine.
Former president of SembMarine’s fully owned subsidiary, Estaleiro Jurong Aracruz (EJA), Martin Cheah Kok Choon, was charged earlier this month in Brazil with money laundering and corruption in connection with the drilling rig contracts. Cheah’s employment with the SembMarine group was terminated in June 2015.
SembMarine has lodged its own suspicious transaction reports with the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) of the Singapore Police Force.
