2 June 2012. Levi Deutsch, 35, used his connections to help launder $200,000 through religious charities he controlled, say federal prosecutors. This came out from a federal undercover sting in New Jersey.
Yesterday, the Brooklyn-born Israeli was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison.
Deutsch, who pleaded guilty last year, admitted he helped launder the money for failed Monmouth County real estate investor Solomon Dwek, then working as an informant for the government after being charged in an unrelated $50 million bank fraud.
Deutsch was charged with funneling checks provided by Dwek through a charity known as a “gemach” and exchanging it for cash, for a fee of approximately 10 percent. The fee was split with Brooklyn Rabbi Mordchai Fish, who has also pleaded guilty in the case and is awaiting sentencing.
