Fairfax newspapers reported that federal and state police have uncovered massive corruption involving customs and quarantine officials, port workers and organised criminals, which allows contraband to flow unchecked through the ports. Mostly illegal drugs and weapons are getting into the country unchecked.
A report by the Polaris taskforce in February found the maritime union is hindering police and government investigations to clean up the ports.
Fairfax reports the situation is so bad that senior ministers recently asked Prime Minister Julia Gillard to approve a crackdown on waterfront crime.
