Long Bay Gaol, Entrance to Metropolitan Training Centre
16 September 2012. Sydney’s Long Bay jail warden Pene Te Hira, stood down following an investigation by Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). It was alleged that prisoners were paying officers $500 to be placed in cells on their own. It was alleged that Mr Te Hira provided mobile phones and brand-name sneakers to inmates and then accepted payment from their associates, or family members, outside the jail. Shoes were allegedly bought from discount retailer Paul’s Warehouse then sold to inmates for an inflated amount.
