A Brazilian court of appeals affirmed on Wednesday a guilty sentence for ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in (in picture) a second corruption case.
Lula is accused of taking bribes to renovate a country home in Atibaia, Sao Paulo state. The appeals court also raised the sentence from 12 years and 11 months to 17 years and one month, for money laundering and corruption.
Lula started serving his sentence in April 2018. But he was released earlier this month following a ruling of the Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court, which determined that defendants in Brazil will only be arrested after the last appeal of their processes.
Lula still remains free while waiting for the final decision, but he still cannot be a candidate in any election, due to the Clean Record Law.
